Congratulations Mr. Wikkerink!
On Thursday, March 11 the staff and students had a chance to celebrate the career and legacy of one of Woodland's teacher's, Mr. Wes Wikkerink. Wes has been a beloved Art and English teacher at Woodland since 1991. Wes has been a key contributor to the Visual Arts program at Woodland, the annual Dominican Republic Service Trip in cooperation with NEXO ministries, and a director of many school drama productions including "FLOOD", which he wrote and directed in 2014.
Wes devoted much of the past year to the completion of an art commission being displayed in the front entrance narthex of the school. The commission titled "The Door" will be an enduring symbol of education at Woodland. It uses a rustic oak door with painted glass panels which forms a tree to symbolize the continuous, regenerative growth and endless possibilities that God has in store for future Woodland students. The mixed media glass panels directly represent the Christian worldview taught at Woodland and are set within the cycle of the Christian narrative of Creation, Fall, Redemption, and Restoration.
Wes will be missed as a teacher at Woodland, but is already active in retirement teaching part time, spending time with his wife Cynthia, and prepping for time in nature with his canoe.
